A new survey has revealed that people who illegally share music over the internet are also spending the most on legal downloads.

Digital music research firm The Leading Question have found that illegal downloader’s spend up to four and half times more on paid for music than the average fan.

It’s a surprising find as many record labels have backed legal action against those who share music illegally. 6 Music reports that people who regularly download music illegally spend on average about £5.52 a month on download sites.

Those who only obtain music from legal sources only spend around £1.27 a month. The report suggested that the music industry needs to encourage illegal downloader’s to use legal alternatives rather than prosecuting them.
