US rocker and American Idol judge Steve Tyler has revealed that his role on the US talent show caused jealousy in Aerosmith.
The rock frontman took his credibility in his hands when he took a role on the US show, and claims he had never even watched the TV programme before joining the panel. In signing up to the talent show, he reveals he risked the wrath of his bandmates.
"When I took Idol, it kind of shook the apple cart. Instead of being happy for me, there was a lot of jealousy, but it worked out," he said in an interview with LA Weekly, adding: "I just wanted to sit next to J.Lo and Randy."
Tyler was a judge on the show for the 2011 series only and is not set to return for this year's run. He reveals that there was no long term impact on Aerosmith however, despite it causing complications in the band's recording schedule.
"The band kind of fell apart for a little bit," says Tyler. "and it was one of those things where we said, 'Let's get together no matter what it takes.' The band flew to L.A., where I'm here with all the hoity-toities and doing Idol."
"The band never really goes away. We're in this club that we all signed onto a long, long time ago. It's been such a way of life that the idea of it not being there doesn't occur."
