R’n’B star, Ashanti has been ordered to pay over half a million dollars for her first producer after a court found her guilty of breaching the terms of their contract.
Genard Parker, an established producer in the industry allegedly helped out the 16 year old Ashanti when she asked him in 1996.
Ashanti was eventually picked up and signed by a record company. Parker released her from his contract with the understanding that he would be producing two songs on the album and would receive $50,000 plus royalties, this condition was not honoured.
Ashanti has been ordered to pay Parker $630,000, the singer was not in court to hear the outcome, reports the BBC, she was said to be disappointed and would be appealing.
Parker’s Lawyer, Jasmine Khalili has called the verdict a “huge victory”.
She went on to say: "They never acknowledged what he had done. It takes a jury to get a thank you."
Ashanti’s lawyer, Harry Stokes, was not so happy, he said: "We think the jury got confused somewhat, particularly on the damages.”
"We feel confident when this is said and done we won't have to pay out anything."
