Lauryn Hill has written a sprawling, 1,300 word letter responding to the claims that she did not pay taxes for three years.

The former Fugees star will face trial at the end of June, accused of three seperate counts of tax evasion and could face a three year prison sentence as well as a $300k fine if found guilty.

Writing on her Tumblr about the impending court case, Hill has defended her actions by saying that she "left a more mainstream and public life" during the period in question saying she did so to live away "from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it".

Claiming that her family come before anything else in her life, Hill states that the "safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns."

Hill will be in court in Newark, New Jersey on June 29th accused of failing to file tax returns to the IRS from 2005 to 2007, a period in which she is eastimated to have earned $1.8 million.
