This 'Melodic Today' compilation album is a vibrant melting pot of rock, hip-hop funk and electronica that is consistently...well, ace. Working For A Nuclear Free City's opener is a thumping, two minute blast of superfunk that recalls Curtis Mayfield at is best, followed by Baikonour's 'Coltan Anyone?' - a cross breed of Japanese film music and beats from the 'Blow up' club, all held together with a big fat chunky bassline. What more could you ask for?
One of the highlights of the whole collection is the truly magnificent Department of Eagles' 'Forty Dollar Rug'. Featuring lyrical poetry like "I live in a flat with 3 other blokes/and it doesn't bother me at all' and "20 dollar lamp? Oh yeah/Playstation 2?Oh yeah/40 dollar rug? Oh yeah" on top of vintage Ugly Duckling beats and Stereo Mc's-esque rasping delivery. Fantastic.
John Stammers breaks everything up with his lovely folkish strum 'The Fridge', while the standard drops a little with Dungen and 'Festival' - a Little Barrie pastiche at best. Hulk's 'Photographs' is a dreamy, lilting piece of pyschedelica ends a truly diverse compilation, that serves as a calling card for little known artists on the up. Long may it continue.
