Beastie Boys rapper Adam Yauch has died at the age of 48, it has been reported.

US magazine Rolling Stone has reported the news, but does not give reasons for the music star's death. He was previously diagnosed with cancer in 2009, and in 2011 suggested that he was still suffering from the disease.

Speaking of his treatment last year, Yauch said: "Reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated".

Beastie Boys shot to fame in the eighties with hit singles including '(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)' and 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn'. They formed in 1979 under the name The Young Aborigines but changed it later.

The band were inducted into America's Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame earlier this year.
