Peter Jackson has taken to Facebook to post a message promising further surprises from The Hobbit as the countdown to the film continues.

The first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released this week, and the director has promised that there will be more goodies to follow.

He wrote: "Hi everyone! This year is the tenth anniversary of the release of The Fellowship of the Ring, and we wanted to give the fans a Christmas treat ahead of the release of the two Hobbit movies in Dec 2012 and 2013. Stay tuned for more. Cheers!"

Whilst nothing is given away, it means that there could be more treats ahead as Christmas approaches for fans of all things Tolkien.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released on December 14, 2012.
