Fugees' Wyclef Jean Launches Clothing Range

But they are threads with a message...

June 30, 2005 by Lowri Williams

Wyclef and the FugeesWyclef Jean of Fugee’s fame has launched his new clothing range ‘Refugee By DIA Clothing’ in America.

DIA Clothing has already been a hit in over here in Europe; Wyclef hopes that his clothes will be able to inspire and promote unity and cultural awareness in the US, reports Allhiphop.

At the moment the range is a men’s only collection, with women’s clothes being introduced to the collection early next year.

Wyclef has said: "People buy Sean John because it's owned by Puffy. People buy Avirex because it's endorsed by Method Man. People will probably buy my line because it's owned by me, but they will walk away with more."

The range combines French, Italian and American style and focuses on a mix of contemporary and cosmopolitan.

The clothing line’s mantra is a message from Wyclef that aims to remind US citizens that "We are all Refugees."

Wyclef said: "'We are all Refugees' means that everyone is a refugee. Everyone in the United States is a refugee to some degree. No one's culture originated here."

As a long time activist is his native homeland of Haiti, the rapper is hoping to use DIA Clothing as part of his quest to help people inform themselves of their cultural heritage and ancestral struggles.

"In the past either our parents or ancestors left their homelands to come here for various reasons. People die because they are refugees.  People need to remember that."
