It's been a busy year for women in music: the likes of Gaga, Beyonce and Katy Perry have dominated the airwaves, while Britain's best PJ Harvey and Jessie J have been topping the year's critical polls and awards. We've seen the goldie oldies like Debbie Harry and Patti Smith out on tour again and some exciting new acts like Adele, Janelle Monae, the femme-fronted Best Coast, Warpaint and St Vincent.
Even Courtney Love just this week showed that girls are still going as wild as ever, appearing topless on stage. And look, we haven't even said a word about Lana Del Rey yet, oh wait, oops...
So, as 2011 draws to a close, we decided to take a look at the women taking the music world by storm right now and have assembled a definitive list of a Top 50. You can see all our choices, here. If you disagree with any, do leave a comment telling us who we've missed out!
And here you can have your say on who is THE GREATEST of all these lovely independent ladies. Head over here to vote in our poll on the matter.
