Stereogum.com have released their latest tribute album, ‘Stroked: A Tribute To Is This It’, available now as a free MP3 download.
Following on from the site’s previous reworkings of Bjork’s ‘Post’, Radiohead’s ‘OK Computer’, and ‘Automatic For The People’ by R.E.M., Stereogum’s latest tribute album comes as The Strokes celebrate 10 years since the release of their seminal album ‘Is This It’ in 2001.
The album features covers of all the NYC band's songs on 'Is This It' by indie artists such as Austra, Owen Pallett, Peter Bjorn and John, Frankie Rose, Chelsea Wolfe, Real Estate, Heems, Wise Blood, The Morning Benders, Computer Magic and Deradoorian.
"In a strange way, 'Is This It' sounded like something entirely new and entirely familiar at the same time," the site explains behind their choice of album. "That’s one secret to its appeal. That, and the simple head-nodding hooks on modern classics like 'Last Nite,' 'Someday,' and 'Hard To Explain' are so immediate. It’s a clean, but scruffy collection. It’s honed and tight, but also just loose enough — loose mostly in the presentation."
You can download the album here. We recommend that you listen to Austra's reworking of 'Alone, Together', Owen Pallett's version of 'Hard To Explain' and Chelsea Wolfe's take on 'The Modern Age'.
