Sting is one of a number of celebrities who have signed an open letting urging the government to consider decriminalising drugs.
Dame Judi Dench and actress Kathy Burke also signed the letter, which follows a report by the Global Commission on Drug Policy, which urged legalisation of some drugs.
"Should such a review of the evidence demonstrate the failure of the current position we would call for the immediate decriminalisation of drug possession,” the letter says.
Sting added: "Giving young people criminal records for minor drug possession serves little purpose - it is time to think of more imaginative ways of addressing drug use in our society."
The Home Office said in response that it had “no intention” of changing drug laws, reports BBC News.
