Blooming from their trip hop origins, Morcheeba’s line up has recently changed, substituting frontwoman Skye Edwards for Daisy Martey, and their direction has definitely taken a more mellow, mainstream route with new album The Antidote.
The album continues in the very feel good Morcheeba vibe, with Martey’s smooth vocals dripping like honey. 'Lighten Up' is a meandering affirmation of positivity, exhibiting explicit Dido influence in Martey’s vocal quality. The title track deserves to grace the charts later this year, with its sultry flowing melodies and rhythmic vocals qualifying it is a perfectly crafted piece of pop.
The rest of the album follows in the same footsteps; with offerings 'Wonders Never Cease' (previously released) and 'God Bless and Goodbye' demonstrating a fluidity of exceptional production coupled with a more world music feel. The eclecticly influence progression of Morcheeba largely stems from the exotic travel and experiences induldged in by key members Paul and Ross Godfrey since their last offerings.
Their increasing MOR sound may upset their cult following but will hopefully open the ears of a larger audience to the band, and with trademark tracks like 'Living Hell' still ruling their sound, this band will never run the risk of ‘selling out’.
