Bio:
Formed in 1985, the Stone Roses built up a strong Manchester following by playing gigs in warehouses. They released their first single, 'So Young' in 1987 on Thin Line Records, and it failed to trouble the charts. They tried another single 'Sally Cinnamon' at the end of '87, and while it was another chart failure, it caught the attention of Silvertone Records. They signed a contract with them at the end of 1998. They released their third single, 'Elephant Stone' and the public began to catch on how good they were.
The Stone Roses released their eponymous debut album in May 1989 to rave reviews. It spawned classics such as 'Fools Gold' and 'She Bangs The Drums'. In 1990 the Stone Roses organised a massive gig on Spike Island, which 30,000 people attended. After the gig a lawsuit with Silvertone Records began. The Stone Roses wanted to leave the label, so Silvertone responded by preventing them from releasing any new material. The Roses won the case and signed to Geffen.
Their follow-up album, 'Second Coming', didn't materialise until late 1994, and wasn't as well received as their debut. Then came a series of disasters, with Reni leaving the band and John Squire breaking his collar bone. In 1996, Squire left the band to form the Seahorses, and after his departure the band slowly fell apart.
