More Black Eyed T's
Gwen Stefani started off her career by contributing backing vocals to her brother’s ska-influenced band No Doubt. At this time few could have predicted that she would become one of the biggest stars on the planet. Especially when the band decided to call it a day after original lead singer and founding member John Spence committed suicide. Fortunately, the split was only temporary and it wasn’t long before Gwen took up lead vocals.
The band went on to become one of the most successful bands of the 90’s, with platinum-plus album sales and one omnipresent single that secured a more than healthy royalty flow (‘Don’t Speak’). Meanwhile, attention was always concentrated on the front woman by fashion folk, teenage girls and the music press alike. Speculation on her quitting the band abounded for some time, increased by her success with the contribution to Eve’s ‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind’.
And you know how the next part of the story goes: girl goes solo, gains weird obsession with harajuku girls and delivers an album with Andre 3000, New Order and The Neptunes amongst the production credits. Suddenly she gets all the more successful. More number one singles, a role in a hit film (The Aviator) and a fashion range that cashes in on the “Get Gwen’s Style!” pages that have been adorning fashion mags for a decade.
It looks like Gwen will be around for a while.
