A new book has revealed that Frank Sinatra served as a mafia courier and narrowly escaped arrest when carrying a briefcase containing $3.5 million.‘Sinatra: The Life’ by Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan links Sinatra to organised crime throughout the new unauthorised biography, reports Reuters, something that Sinatra himself always denied.
However, FBI files released in 1998 after the singer’s death depicted him as a close friend of Chicago mob boss Sam Giancana, Lucky Luciano and Willie Moretti.
Entertainer Jerry Lewis is quoted in the book as saying: "He volunteered to be a messenger for them. And he almost got caught once ... in New York."
According to Lewis Sinatra was going through customs with "three and a half million in fifties" officials opened the case containing the money but due to the big crowds attempting to see Sinatra the case was never properly searched.
It was a close call for Sinatra, if he had of been caught Lewis believes "We would never have heard of him again."
‘Sinatra: The Life’ is in the shops on May 16.
