BBC 6 Music is to continue broadcasting after the BBC Trust conceded that the case for its closure had not been made.
In March, BBC Director General Mark Thompson proposed the closure of the station and the Asian Network as part of budget cuts.
These were then put forward for review to the BBC Trust, amid widespread calls for 6 Music to remain open.
But in their initial report, BBC Trust Chairman Sir Michael Lyon concluded “that, as things stand, the case has not been made for the closure of 6 Music”.
However, the Trust is to consider a formal proposal for the closure of the Asian Network.
Thousands of music fans and artist backed a campaign to save 6 Music when its proposed closure was first muted earlier this year.
The station's supporters included former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who said 6 Music was necessary for Britain to be a “creative society”.
David Bowie, Lily Allen and Radiohead also backed the station to remain open.
