Hot right now:

    10 Albums I Can't Wait For In 2010!

Now that 2009 is over, let's look ahead

December 13, 2009 by Chris Reynolds

So how did you feel about 2009? Are you sick of end of year lists yet and now looking forward rather than behind? Well 2010 not only signals the start of a new decade but also a big year for music – Glastonbury celebrates its 40th anniversary, great indie hopes like MGMT and Foals will return and Simon Cowell might just start the year without a Christmas number one under his belt.

So without further ado here are the 10 albums I’m most looking forward to in 2010 starting with a band who we’ve heard of recently...

    Interpol

Interpol lead singer Paul Banks has only just left the UK on the back of some successful shows with his solo side project ‘Julien Plenti’, and if you like his brooding croon you won’t be disappointed in 2010 with the return of his main focus, Interpol. The band have been somewhat vocal of late in expressing their dismay at the way ‘Our Love to Admire’ worked out, citing a return to their debut album as their aim for their 4th record. At their best Interpol are peerless so be excited about summer festival slots and a return to the old skool.

    Vampire Weekend

11 days into the next decade is when you can listen to Vampire Weekend’s 2nd album and it’s supposed to be a corker. Debut single ‘Cousins’ is a frantic but unmistakably Vampire Weekend track with lots of flailing guitars and regimented drumming. The band have stated it’ll be typically short and sharp album under the 40 minute mark which fits nicely with their debut.

    Foals

How do you follow up the album of 2008? By making the album of 2010 of course. That’s the simple formula the Oxford band are looking to follow in 2010. They’ve described their new album as sounding “like the dream of an eagle dying”. If they get any more cryptic they might confuse themselves. The one undoubted fact though is that debut ‘Antidotes’ was a mesmerising music journey and Yannis and co. must produce something equally as stunning to feature in those best of the year lists come the end of 2010.

    Delphic

Despite being a less well kept secret now than they were a few months back, Delphic remain one of the ones to watch in 2010. Handily you can pick their debut album ‘Acolyte’ up the same day as Vampire Weekend though you can expect a rather different listen.  Delphic are more of an indie-dance fusion but no less exciting. Then sit back and wait for people to claim they liked them a year ago because they were cool then.

    Klaxons

Yes I did say I was looking forward to this last year but it seems the band weren’t listening and decided to take their time following up ‘Myths of the Near Future’. Nonetheless this will be either spectacular or pants – either way it’ll be worth listening to.

    Blink-182

Unfortunately I’m not in school anymore which might lessen my enjoyment of a Blink 182 album but few long players this year will have the background this release will. After all the in-fighting and arguments which eventually ripped them apart, not to mention Travis’s plane crash and the death of band friend DJ AM – they won’t be short of material. It might be best to expect something slightly more serious than ‘Enema of the State’.

    Hot Chip

Hot Chip are back and going all euro club pop on us - not my words but the band’s. It’s probably best to take that comment with a liberal pinch of salt. ‘Take It In’ is the first single and it’s a sedate little number which sounds nothing like Scooter or Basshunter fortunately. It is however a showcase for Hot Chip’s sensitive side and yet quite enjoyably dancey – there’s hope after all.

    MGMT

If there’s one thing MGMT taught us in 2008, it’s that selling out doesn’t necessarily mean losing your credibility. In fact MGMT garnered popularity for their bare faced assertion that selling out is fun and gets you all the money and women you want. ‘Congratulations’ is due out early 2010 and was recorded in blazing hot Malibu, California last summer – so don’t expect the themes to darken too much this time.

    The Drums

If MGMT do fail to step up to the plate perhaps the Drums will satisfy our yearnings instead. The instantly joyous ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ featured on their ‘Summertime’ EP serves notice of a band who will gather a significant fanbase. Bringing back memories of everything from Joy Division to the Monkees, you can put your life savings on the fact that the Drums will shoot to prominence next year. Their debut album is also due in early 2010.

    Glassjaw

This post –hardcore band have demonstrated their talent for in-fighting and line-up changes in the past. Fortunately they also have a record of outstanding music. The enigmatic Daryl Palumbo has announced his band will support Brand New in the new year as well as doing a short tour of their own through the UK. Will Glassjaw finally piece themselves back together enough for some new material? Here’s hoping...

So there you have it – 2010 looks rosy in the hands of the above. Anyone I missed...?
