Major Music Concert To Kick Off The World Cup

A huge concert is being organised to kick off the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Taking place on June 10 at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, the event is being billed as a three hour music extravaganza featuring an array of African artists and international guests.

The man behind the concert is Kevin Wall, who also staged the Live 8 and Live Earth concerts in London, and he says acts have been queuing up to take part.

He told the BBC that he has been “overwhelmed” with interest from musicians, before adding:  "That's unusual, normally it's the other way round."

Early rumours predict that The Spice Girls will be reforming once again for the show, but Wall is remaining tight lipped.

He said: "I've heard a lot of these rumours, we've been overwhelmed by ideas like that, that have come to us from artists and the press.

"We're really trying to highlight football and the cultures and colour and music of Africa so you will see a lot of great international artists but I can't comment on who they are."

The line-up and ticket details will be announced in January.

  • why would anyone in South Africa want to see the Spice Girls?? We've got enough local acts and there are manu other international acts worth looking at. I just hope this doesn't become another "token" event. And why an international promoter/production co?? What's wrong with the local guys??

  • I am shocked at the suggestion that we would have the Spice Girls as the musicians involved with the 2010 World Cup being held in AFRICA!?! When the UK hosts the World Cup then that would be their opportunity to participate surely!?! We are proudly South African and have so very many SA artists who are in my opinion more qualified to open the games with the correct feel than a group from another country. Nothing personal Spice Girls.

  • I agree with that why??, we have so much more talented musicians in South Africa. This is a South African world cup and I'm sure more people would be interested in watching a proper South African concert with international quality sound and lighting, we have all the right local companies and artists to do it, Why do we give the South African Community a change to show the world what we got, let us have a chance to do something to get this country right!

  • If anyone should get this job it's Johnny Clegg and his band or at least another AFRICAN act? There are so many people that have made African music available to people over the world.
