A mother of four in America has been fined a whopping $1.9million for illegal file-sharing.
Jammie Thomas-Rassett was found guilty of violating music copyright by a jury in Minnesota and was ordered to pay damages to the record industry.
32-year-old Thomas-Rassett accused the “huge music fan” of uploading 1,700 songs to the Kazaa file-sharing site before it was made illegal. She then shared 24 songs by artists including Sheryl Crow and Green Day.
Her defence argued that the Recording Industry Association of America could not prove who shared the songs, saying it could have been another member of her family.
Thomas-Rassett said outside court there was no way she could afford to pay off the fine, saying: "There's no way they're ever going to get that ($1.9million). I'm a mom, limited means, so I'm not going to worry about it now."
Despite the mammoth fine, the RIAA said they would be willing to settle out of court for a lesser amount.
