When I think of Kentucky I think of the colonel and his greasy bucket of ‘chicken’, now that image has been replaced in my head by four angry young men of emo/punk/rock called Emanuel. It has taken seven years for Emanuel to release their debut album ‘Soundtrack To A Headrush’. Singer and guitarist Matt Breen describes this album as “ten stories from the most ****ed up year of my lifeâ€.This album screams into life with the cry “Listen up mother****ers, this is that new unheard of, unspoken, so if you’re down, then get down, and if you’re not, then get the **** outâ€. ‘Hey Man!’ roars into action with a volcanic eruption that bubbles on the surface and scorches underneath. The hot underbelly of which reveals a good healthy mix of screaming and melodic singing.
At 2 min 13 sec ‘Buy American Machines’ is like an espresso, a short, bitter caffeine rush. With the line “You Cannot Rape The Willingâ€, ‘The Willing’ isn’t as provocative as it would like to be but does contain plenty of screaming and explosive riffs. ‘Hotline’ explains the joys of phone sex, the screaming is good but the melodic singing is less convincing. By ‘Soundtrack To A Headrush’ I’m starting to get bored, and the second half of the album fades into the background of my attention.
I’m not sure I would have waited seven years for this album. It’s not bad, musically it’s tight and well produced, lyrically it’s sometimes interesting but the album does lack something to make it distinct in relation to other bands and in relation to the tracks within it. After a promising start the songs just started to merge into one.
