Notorious BIG's mother Voletta Wallace said finding out things that happened in her son's life during the making of the movie 'Notorious' was “very painful”.
Wallace, who brought up her son in New York on her own, shares a producers credit on the movie and said the dark side of her son's character had to be explored.
She told the BBC: "It was very painful to find out certain things about your son that you never knew. But if I had left them out, it wouldn't be his life.
"I wanted this to be real, I did not want to obliterate the negatives and focus on the positives. You have to put in everything, so we can all learn from it."
Angela Bassett, who plays Voletta in the movie, said it was integral to get Biggie's mother's perspective.
She said: "He had a stage persona, but it was interesting to get to know him through the eyes of his mother.
"To see how loyal he was, how respectful he was; how he knew right from wrong and how he eventually got back on the right road."
'Notorious' is on general release in the UK this Friday (February 13). CLICK HERE to see Jay-Z, P Diddy, Ice-T, Beyonce, Mary J Blige and more at the New York premier.
