Soul singer Etta James was honoured that Beyonce chose to perform one of her songs during Barack Obama's inauguration in Washington DC on Tuesday (January 20th).
Beyonce sang a cover of James’ ‘At Last’, originally released in 1961, as the President and his First Lady Michelle took their first dance at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball.
James' son, Donto, said the singer became emotional as she watched the performance on television from her home in California.
"She was looking forward to seeing it. She was honoured (and) she thought it was great,” he told the New York Daily News.
“She's gotten emotional, just like everybody else."
James, who has suffered complications since undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2003, was not well enough to travel to the Capitol, her son said.
As previously reported on Gigwise, Beyonce fought back tears during an interview shortly after her performance.
“I'm just so proud of my country. There are just certain people in the world that God touches, and [Obama] was born for this,” she said.
