U2's Bono referenced Martin Luther King's American dream speech last night (January 18th) as the band closed the We Are One Obama Inaugural Celebration concert in Washington DC.
Performing in front of a crowd of over half-a-million people at the Lincoln Memorial, Bono said that Mr Obama's presidency would also be a “dream” for countries across the world.
"Let freedom ring. On this spot where we're standing 46 years ago Dr King had a dream. On Tuesday, that dream comes to pass," Bono said, before playing U2's 'Pride (In The Name Of Love)'.
He added during the song: "This is not just an American dream, but also an Irish dream, a European dream, an African dream ... an Israeli dream and a Palestinian dream.”
President-elect Obama watched last night's concert, which marked the official start of a four-day long celebration in the American capital.
Other performances came from from Bruce Springsteen, Beyonce and will.i.am.
But it was Bono who ensured that the celebration maintained an emphasis on politics.
As the band segued into their second song, 'City Of Blinding Lights', the singer said: "What a thrill for four Irish boys from the north side of Dublin to honour you sir, Barack Obama, to be the next president of the United States.”
President-elect Obama's inauguration will take place tomorrow afternoon (January 20th).
