On January 12, 1959 Detroit native Berry Gordy loaned $800 from his family to set up an R&B label which he dubbed Tamla Records. The 29-year-old was already fairly well connected within the industry having co-written the track 'Reet Petite' with Jackie Wilson and he also discovered The Miracles in 1957, who were to become his first signing to Tamla.
