Leona Lewis's chart-topping cover of Snow Patrol's 'Run' was always going to be released as a single, it's been revealed.
Last month, a national newspaper claimed it had pressurised the former X Factor winner's record label to release the song.
However, it has now emerged that Lewis's version was earmarked for release after she performed it for the first time on DJ Jo Whiley's BBC Radio 1 show last summer.
“It’s now something of a tradition the acts who visit Jo Whiley in the studio turn out special cover versions,” a source told the Daily Star newspaper.
“Jo compiles the best into albums, which have been hugely successful. When it came down to nailing the latest collection, naturally 'Run' was on the top of the list of contenders.
“However, Radio 1 were told in no uncertain terms they couldn’t gain the rights to the Snow Patrol track as (Lewis's record label) Syco planned to release Run themselves. They knew they had a diamond of a No 1 up their sleeves.”
Lewis's cover was only knocked from the top spot last month after the latest X Factor winner, Alexandra Burke, released her debut single.
As previously reported on Gigwise, Lewis announced this week that she will release her first autobiography in October, at the age of 23.
