Lily Allen has sought to quash reports that claimed comments she made in a recent interview suggested she endorsed drug use.
Allen was widely criticsed by politicians and anti-drug campaigners yesterday after an interview with Word Magazine was serialised in a national newspaper.
Allen was quoted as saying she wished people wouldn't “sensationalise” stories surrounding cocaine and admitted she knew regular users.
Various publications claimed Allen's comments suggested she had endorsed the drug's use.
However, in a statement today (January 8th), Allen's management company said her comments were made in reply to a question about 'Everyone's At It' – a song on her new album.
“In her answer she replied that she 'had no statement to make, I just wish people wouldn't sensationalise this thing that just exists',” the statement said.
“At no point does she say that drugs are a good thing or that she condones drug use; in fact she says that "I can spot the signs (of people on drugs) and it terrifies me'."
The statement added: “Lily Allen would like to state unequivocally that she does not condone illegal drug use and has every sympathy with individuals and families whose lives have been blighted by drugs.”
