The Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton has been found dead at his home in Michigan.
Asheton, 60, is thought to have suffered a heart attack, although the official cause of death has yet to been confirmed.
The guitarist was one of the group's founding members along with his brother, Scott, frontman Iggy Pop and bassist Dave Alexander.
Asheton's body was discovered by police on Monday (January 5th) evening, a detective told The Ann Arbor News.
The guitarist's personal assistant is understood to have contacted authorities after he was unable to contact Asheton for several days.
Asheton, who was born in Washington DC, was responsible for some of The Stooges' most infamous guitarist riffs.
But he showed his versatility as a musician by switching to bass on the band's third album, 1973's 'Raw Power'.
After leaving the band in the mid-70s, he played with a number of different groups before reforming with the original Stooges line up in 2003.
One the band's last album, 2007's 'The Weirdness', he returned to his original role as guitarist.
The Stooges toured extensively throughout 2007 and 2008, playing a number of high profile festival slots around the world.
