Andrew Lloyd Webber has called the UK's recent entrants to the Eurovision Song Contest “absolute and total rubbish”.
The composer, who is writing the UK's next entry, said poor song quality had given the contest a bad reputation with the public.
“I canvassed all the casts in my shows and they said the reason why they don't vote for Britain is because we don't bother. They resent it,” he told the BBC.
“Let's face it, some of the acts have been rather ludicrous, but from their point of view, what we've done to Eurovision is almost worse.”
As previously reported on Gigwise, the UK's next entrant will be chosen via the TV talent search, Your Country Needs.
Along with industry professionals, Lord Lloyd Webber will select six finalists, who will then compete on television. The public will decide the eventual winner.
Despite his involvement, Lord Lloyd Webber, who will write the song after the winner is chosen, said the UK wouldn't win the contest.
“We're not going to win it, let's face it. I don't think that's possible, but at the same time we could have a laugh along the way,” he said.
Last year, the UK’s entrant Andy Abrahams, a former X-Factor contestant, finished joint last, scoring points from Ireland and San Marino.
This year's Eurovision Song Contest will feature juries in a bid to end neighbourly voting.
