Bookmakers have begun paying out on X Factor winner Alexandra Burke scoring this year’s Christmas number one.
The singer’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ has sold over 300,000 more copies than its nearest rival – the late Jeff Buckley’s version of the same track.
"There's absolutely no way Alexandra can be toppled so there's no point us sitting on the cash,” Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams told the Mirror.
"Christmas has come early for Alexandra fans and the X Factor winner has once again cost the bookies a fortune.”
William warned that Ladbrokes may stop taking bets on X Factor winners in the future following their recent dominance of the Christmas charts.
Burke is currently 200-1 ON with the bookmaker.
As previously reported on Gigwise, yesterday the Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he would buy Burke’s single as a Christmas present.
Sales figures seen by Gigwise suggest Buckley’s cover will come second on Sunday, while Leona Lewis, the current number one, will fall to third.
Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's song has shot up the charts thanks to an internet campaign launched by his fans.
