Simon Cowell has revealed that both Sir Paul McCartney and Britney Spears have been asked to be special guests on American Idol.
Cowell, the talent contest's head judge, told reporters he had approached Sir Paul “ever year” about appearing on the show but each attempt had so far proved unsuccessful.
But Cowell said he was more confident that the show's bosses could secure Spears' participation in the forthcoming series.
"She would, literally, be first on the list as far as I'm concerned in any capacity," Cowell said.
"I would love to see her mentor the contestants, but if she doesn't want to do that, and she wants to come on the show and perform, I would welcome her anytime."
Spears made a surprise appearance on the recent series of the British equivalent to American Idol, The X Factor.
Although she was criticised by fans for miming, Cowell said Spears' performance was “extraordinary”.
He added: “Even with all the stuff that's gone on with her the past two years, there was more excitement and interest in her than I've seen in anyone in years. She would be very, very welcome."
