More than 50 television viewers have complained after a contestant on The X Factor made a gun gesture on the programme.
Rachel Hylton pointed her fingers at fellow contestant Daniel Evans as they competed in the sing off during last Saturday's show.
The symbol, commonly associated with gang violence, sparked “a number” of complaints to regulator Ofcom, according to the Daily Mirror newspaper.
"Some viewers see this as Rachel's way of condoning gun use,” a source said.
"She knew what she was doing and knew the cameras were watching so it was pretty stupid, especially given her background.”
But Hylton, who was given community service eight years ago for attacking a pensioner and later jailed over a seperate incident, “in no way meant offence”, a spokesperson for the show said.
Despite winning over the programme's viewers, Evans was voted out on Saturday.
