Merl Saunders, who played keyboards for Frank Sinatra, has died of complications following a stroke.
Saunders, 74, who suffered a stroke six years ago, was being treated in San Francisco, his family said.
As well as high profile performances with Sinatra and Miles Davies, Saunders also won acclaim thanks to collaborations with Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia.
In a message on his website, his family said he “stood for music and love”.
"We loved him very much and we know that you, his fans, did too," the statement said.
"Sad as we are to lose him, we're very aware of being comforted by the affection coming from all those touched by that smile and that wonderful music."
In 2000 Saunders was awarded for his environmental activism.
