Guy Ritchie has apparently branded his seven-and-a-half year marriage to Madonna a “circus”.
The film director, who confirmed his divorce from the singer yesterday, also said the couple were unable to lead a normal marriage.
Ritchie told the Mirror newspaper: "I just wanted a regular husband and wife thing. But it was always a great song and dance just to do ordinary stuff.
"She's obsessed with her own public image, obsessed with being seen as some kind of global soothsayer.
Ritchie blamed some of Madonna's advisors for making their married life “impossible”.
"I want to be able to go about my business and live my life without all the hoopla,” he told friends.
“Unfortunately, she can't live without all the hoopla. Our marriage was a three-ring circus in the end."
In their joint statement yesterday, the couple said they had not yet agreed a divorce settlement, although various reports claim they are expected to do so shortly.
A spokeswoman added: "They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time."
Madonna is currently performing on her 27-date Sticky & Sweet world tour.
