Metallica's Lars Ulrich says the band's infamous lawsuit against file-sharing site Napster eight years ago was never about the money.
The drummer said that they took action against the site because they wanted control over their back-catalogue, not someone else.
Metallica's legal team took Napster to the U.S. District Court, alleging the company had violated three areas of the law. A settlement was later reached between the band and Napster.
However, despite their legal win in court, for some people the band's reputation was tarnished.
Setting the record straight to the Rolling Stone, Ulrich said: "Nine out of 10 people go, 'What was that about? It was about money.' Fuck you - it wasn't about money. It was about control.
"I'll give away all my shit for free. But I'll decide when and where and how."
