Republican John McCain has accused his Democratic rival Barack Obama of neglecting the American public in his presidential campaign.

Mr McCain told a Republican rally that Mr Obama had become more interested in “his celebrity friends”.

The 72-year-old's comment on Tuesday afternoon came as Mr Obama prepared to host a fundraiser in Beverley Hills, which boasted a performance from Barbra Streisand.

In addition to Streisand's concert, which set guests back $2,500 a ticket, the fundraiser also featured a lavish dinner costing  $28,500 per head.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Ferrell and Jodie Foster were among guests who attended the event on Tuesday evening, helping to raise approximately $9 million for the US Democratic presidential candidate.

Mr McCain also attacked Mr Obama's celebrity endorsers earlier this year in a campaign advert which placed the Democrat alongside Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

Mr Obama's bid to become America's first black president has attracted widespread support from a host of stars.
