Oasis’ Noel Gallagher has defended Russell Brand’s performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, insisting the comedian’s humour was wasted on the show.
Brand has been widely criticised by American commentators for using his role as host to send political messages to the large TV audience.
The British comedian’s choice of jokes, which included calling President George W Bush a “retarded cowboy”, have also come under attack.
But, writing on his band’s blog, Gallagher defended Brand, saying the US comedian Chris Rock would have been allowed to say such remarks.
Talking about a phone in debating the host’s performance, Gallagher wrote: “Some woman called in saying as an American she didn't like a British guy coming over here, insulting her commander-in-chief!!
“Very funny. But NOT funny at all. If Chris Rock, for example, says that kind of thing everybody laughs because they think they should, but if it's a man who's dressed up like a vampire's lamp-shade? Well?
“He was wasted on the shower of God-fearing, corporate hot-dogs anyway.”
Three Weeks To Recover
Gallagher, who was attacked on stage by a fan in Canada last weekend, also revealed on his blog that he may take three weeks to recover from rib injuries sustained in the incident.
As previously reported on Gigwise, Oasis are due to play a one off show in Cornwall at the end of September.
The band have already been forced to cancel two shows on their North America tour.
