Britney Spears ancestors lived together in the North London district of Tottenham, new research has discovered.
But Genealogists at the London Metropolitan Archives said the singer's great-grandparents, George Anthony Portell and Lillian Esther Lewis, may have been “living in sin”.
According to their research, the couple gave the same address on their marriage card, which suggests they had been living together before engagement – a strict taboo at the time.
Although, researchers believe that the couple may have been listed as sharing a property because Spears' great-grandfather was a member of the Royal Navy.
Mr Portell's career could have meant he didn't have a home of his own, they said.
Laurence Ward, head of the digital wing of the archive, added: “It's highly possible that because the guy was in the Navy, he used her address.
"There's no way we can prove anything either way. It's open to interpretation."
As previously reported on Gigwise, Spears made a triumphant comeback at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, taking home three awards.
