Russell Brand Asked To Host MTV Video Music Awards Again

Comedian Russell Brand says he has been asked to return as host of the MTV Video Music Awards.

Brand divided opinion with a number of controversial statements when when he compered the 2008 ceremony in Los Angeles last weekend.

But ratings for the event were up a fifth on the last year, with the broadcaster holding Brand's performance accountable for the increase.

“MTV told me they want me to do it again. Afterwards they were really thrilled,” Brand told the Sun newspaper.

“There was a 20 per cent increase in viewers from last year’s show and wow, isn’t life exciting.”

The comedian's monologues covered everything from the forthcoming presidential election to the sexual status of America's latest heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers.

Despite his success, the comedian, who is due to star in two Hollywood films in the next 12 months, said he would think hard about returning to the ceremony.

“The VMAs are the hardest thing I have ever done and I will think very carefully before accepting their kind offer of doing it again,” Brand said.

“I spent a lot of time suppressing the urge to scream a career- ending remark during the show. The knowledge that you could say something that would make the world go nuts was difficult.”
