Typical fans of heavy metal music have low self-esteem and don't like to work hard, according to new findings.
But the study into how closely music tastes and personalities are related also found that metal fans were generally more gentle and at ease with themselves than followers of music genres.
The research, which was undertaken by a professor at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, is the first time the relationship has been studied in such detail.
Like metal fans, indie music lovers were also found to have low self-esteem but the study revealed that they tend to be more creative.
Whereas, followers of genres like Reggae, Rap and chart music were all found to share high confidence levels and a gentle personality.
Commenting on the study, which were accumulated from answers by 36,000 people, Professor Adrian North said advertisers should take note about the results.
"If you know a person's music preference you can tell what kind of person they are, who to sell to,” he said.
"There are obvious implications for the music industry who are are worried about declining CD sales.
"One of the most surprising things is the similarities between fans of classical music and heavy metal. They're both creative and at ease but not outgoing.
"The general public has held a stereotype of heavy metal fans being suicidally depressed and of being a danger to themselves and society in general. But they are quite delicate things."

- Yes I am a metal fan with low self esteem, who doesn’t like to work hard and is also gentle. It’’s amazing how I fit the category from their study. Suddenly I feel complete.

- I find these studies interesting - they spend years researching and end up with answers that people already know! Err..it’s loud, better not stand near the speaker.

The superdouche who did this study should come into the mosh pit at a Machine ****IN Head show and then he can accurately discern how gentle we are as metal heads. He might learn what hard work is too...cause i think he’d get destroyed in a Lamb of God or Slayer pit.

If anything, I find ’metalheads’’ to be some of the most intelligent, open-minded, talented, artistic people on the plant. There is a method behind their madness I believe. Simply, metal music in general requires a brain to actually comprehend what the **** the instruments are doing. It requires emotion. It requires analysis that listening to ’’background music’’ such as ’’chart music’̵
