Britney Spears will be responsible for opening this year's MTV Video Music Awards, the broadcaster has confirmed.
Spears will “kick off” proceedings in Los Angeles on Sunday with something “fun and exciting” but won't perform.
The singer last appeared on stage at the event in 2007 and was largely criticised for her below par performance.

In a statement, Spears praised her association with the ceremony, adding: "How can I not be there to kick off their 25th VMAs?
“I'm excited to open the entire show, to say 'hi' to my fans and to be nominated."
MTV president Van Toffler said he would be “rooting” for Spears, saying that it felt like her year.
This years VMAs will be presented by comedian Russell Brand and artists scheduled to perform live include T.I., Rihanna, Lil' Wayne and Paramore.
