Songs by The Police and U2 contain some of the most misunderstood lyrics of all time, according to a new survey.

The Police topped the poll with a line from 'When The World Is Running Down' -  "you make the best of what's still around" – which is often misheard as "you make the best homemade stew around".

At number two was the line "It's alright, it's okay, you may look the other way" from the Bee Gees hit 'Stayin' Alive' - which is heard as "it's alright, it's okay, you make love the other way".

Hearing aid provider Amplifon polled 2000 people in the survey.

Responding to the results, the company's director Enrico Vacca said: "Some people go for years singing the wrong lyrics to their favourite songs.

"We heard some brilliant misquotes during our research that had us in stitches."

Other acts who had lyrics which featured in the top-10 included The Beatles, Queen and Oasis.

  • My brother was singing Jethro Tull "sitting on a park bench five little girls with bad intents" as "sitting on a park bench five little girls with battered heads".

  • @staylor - Actually your "correct" one is wrong. The real lyrics are "Sitting on a park bench eyeing little girls with bad intent". :)
