China is to ban foreign artists that “whip up ethnic hatred” from performing in the country, it's been revealed.
The Chinese government also said that artists who attend events that threaten the country's sovereignty or violate its “religious policy or cultural norms" will also receive an automatic ban.
The decision follows the pro-Tibet outburst of Icelandic singer Bjork during a concert in Shanghai earlier this year.
The singer was told at the time that she had broken Chinese law and hurt Chinese people's feelings with her calls of 'Tibet, Tibet'.
The Peoples Republic of China has ruled Tibet since 1951 and conversation about Tibet’s independence is considered a taboo in China.
The statement from the Chinese ministry of culture also reinforced existing guidelines against performers and said that future encores must be pre-approved.
