Apple are widely expected to unveil the second generation of their popular iPhone later today (June 9th).

The new edition of the phone, which was originally released last year, is expected to be cheaper and boast 3G software.

Apple were widely criticised when the original iPhone was released without 3G – which provides a faster connection to the internet.

The company's co-founder and Chief Executive Steve Jobs is scheduled to address Apple software developers in San Francisco later.

Reports have suggested that the new model will also be smaller and cheaper, in order to allow the company to reach its target of 10million sales by the end of 2008.

Currently, in the United Kingdom the phone is only available through one service provider at three fix rate tariffs. Some reports have claimed that the new iPhone could be free to those who pay a higher subscription.
