Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz has defended his decision not to confirm that his wife Ashlee Simpson was expecting the couple’s first child.
In an email to MTV, Wentz said that every woman “has the right to wait at least three months before sharing this very personal news.”
Wentz denied that Simpson was expecting a child when asked about the rumours in April.
However, in a joint statement released on Wednesday (May 28th), the couple confirmed that Simpson had passed the first trimester of pregnancy.
In his email, Wentz said that his “first instinct was to protect her and the baby” by keeping the news private.
"It's insane that you can't let happy news brew in Hollywood. This wasn't about press or anything.
“It was about the health of the baby and trying to find a way to be happy with what should be the most happy time of our lives in the middle of a press blitz,” he said.
Wentz and Simpson married earlier this month in a private ceremony in California.
They exchanged vows in front of approximately 150 family members and friends at Simpson’s parent’s home in San Fernando Valley on May 17th.
