Woolworths To Stop Selling Music Singles

Chain says they are in 'terminal decline'...

May 27, 2008 by Jason Gregory

High street chain Woolworths is to stop selling CD singles because the format is in “terminal decline”.

Woolworths said that the growth in the popularity of digital-downloads was the main reason behind its decision.

"Digital downloading is now the true customer choice for listening and purchasing single music tracks,” Jim Batchelor, Woolworths commercial director told the BBC.

The chain will stop stocking the format in August but will continue to sell one-off singles, such as the X-Factor because they continue to sell in huge numbers.

Figures published this month show that sales of the single are a third of what they were in 2007.

In 1999, when CD, tape and vinyl releases were still popular, 78million singles were purchased in the UK, compared to just 8million last year.

    • prices are stoopid. so many chart comp cds makes it pointless to buy individual cd singles- no wonder people are buying less cd singles. but downloads are low quality , not even close to cd let alone vinyl. flac needs to takes off.
