David Cook’s unexpected win in the final of American Idol was watched by 32 million viewers on Wednesday (May 21st).
The two hour Fox Broadcast was the second most watched programme on the network in 2008, topped only by the opening night of the series.
Cook, who prior to the competition was a waiter in a bar, beat 17-year-old David Archuleta to take the prize.
Cook received 12 million more votes than his competitor as 97.5million people voted across the country.
The 25-year-old singer sang Collective Soul’s ‘The World I Know’ and U2’s ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ during the final.
