Organisers of the Love Music Hate Racism campaign are planning protests after Richard Barnbrook, a member of the BNP, was elected onto the London Assembly this week.
The campaign said that Barnbrook, who is BNP leader on Barking and Dagenham Council, had “managed to con a small minority of Londoners”.
Barnbrook’s election means that he will hold one of 25 seats on the London Assembly.
In a statement, Love Music Hate Racism organisers said that last Sunday’s Rock Against Racism carnival, which was attended by over 100,000 people, had prevented more BNP members from being elected in Thursday’s local elections.
“The Carnival showed the mass audience opposed to racism and fascism - which can build the bigger united anti-fascist movement that can stop the Nazis,” they said.
Last Sunday’s Carnival, which marked the 30th anniversary of the original event, was headlined by The Good, The Bad and The Queen and featured a performance from Helsinki – the side-project of Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell.
McConnell said yesterday that the BNP should know “they're not fooling us” and that “multicultural Britain should be celebrated”
“Immigration is not to blame for unemployment or housing problems, and does not negatively affect the economy, but the BNP tell us this is actually the case,” he added.
