Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek has spoken about the media coverage of bandmate Pete Doherty’s recent imprisonment.

Speaking exclusively to Gigwise, Ficek said reports in the tabloid press, including claims that Doherty was taking heroin inside prison, “were nothing new to us.”

“It’s not really a surprise to how they’re portraying it and the way they’re trying to sensationalise, almost out of thin air, to try and create stories,” he said.

“That’s what they do, that’s their job and that’s what they do. There’s no point letting it get on top of you.”

Doherty was sentenced to 14 weeks in jail earlier this month after it was ruled that he had failed to adhere to his probation order.

Although Ficek said that the band had grown “quite thick skin” to the tabloid reports, he admitted that “it’s never nice to see your friend being portrayed like that”.

Despite Doherty’s imprisonment, Ficek said that the band would “remain strong” and that they were in a more “positive situation” than previous years.

“You can never rule out custodial sentences regarding the situation he’s in. Anyone who’s in that kind of trouble with drugs, you can never rule out custodial situations – but it was a bit of a surprise.

“But, you know, the band will remain strong; we’re just focusing on the future really, getting him out and concentrating on the record.”

As well as speaking about the new Babyshambles album, which will be released later this year, Ficek also talked about work on his ongoing side projects.

“I’ll probably be doing some shows in about early June time I reckon. I’ve been doing stuff in around London anyway – I do probably a couple of shows a week in London but just under pseudonyms,” he said.

One of Ficek’s projects, Roses, Kings, Castles, will release their new single soon. For more information, click here.
