Ann Widdecombe: Pete Doherty Should Have Been Jailed Earlier

Tory MP Ann Widdecombe has hit out at the British Justice System saying that Pete Doherty should have been put behind bars much earlier.

The 60-year-old said that not jailing Pete for his various drugs offences much earlier sent out the wrong message to impressionable members of the public.

Glad to see him finally in jail for breaking the conditions of his probation order, Widdecombe told the NME: "This is long overdue. The fact that he got away with it for so long was sending out the wrong signals. When someone is in the public eye and sets the wrong example there should be a crackdown.

"Rehabilitation does not go far enough in Pete's case, because we need to send out a signal that what he was doing was illegal. It's good that an example has been made."

Doherty was jailed for 14 weeks on April 8.
