The social-networking website Myspace is to launch a new download service in association with three of the world’s four major record labels.
Myspace Music will allow users to download music and purchase merchandise straight from artists profile pages.
The company’s deal with Universal, Warner Music and SonyBMG is being seen as a direct challenge to the dominance of Apple’s online iTunes music store.
Over recent years, Myspace has become famous for helping to launch the careers of a number of acts, including Lily Allen and Hadouken!
Chris DeWolfe, MySpace co-founder and chief executive, said yesterday (April 3rd) that “Myspace Music is a new way of experiencing music online that everyone can participate in."
As part of the deal, users will be able to download music without copy protection, although, music by major acts will still have restrictions.
The new service will be introduced over the coming months.
